Tribute to singer songwriter Bill Reid 1957-2007
28 June 2008
Bill Reid, Singer, Song Writer. 1957-2007. Passed away on Tuesday 30th October, a very popular entertainer on the Isle of Wight in the late 80s, has recently died in Southampton, at the age of 50. He was born on the Island and lived in Cowes for many years. His late father, Billy Reid, the much-celebrated British songwriter, spent the last years of his life in Gurnard. His songs were recorded by Frank Sinatra, Al Jolson, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald. These included It’s A Pity to Say Goodnight, A Tree in a Meadow, The Gypsy. Bill once said: “My dad was a genius and left a legacy of 250 songs.” In the early part of his own life Bill spent three years in London trying to break though as a songwriter. Stars like Ian Dury and Alex Harvey liked Bill’s songs. He sang here with his own trio in the 80s and he released his own single here on the Island, “Let’s Celebrate”. In recent years he lived in Weston, Southampton, with his partner, Lisa Baker, and was a regular entertainer on the local pub and club circuit. Until his unexpected death he was still writing songs. During the Eighties I carried my OM2 with 28mm lens everywhere with me. Much to annoyance of friends I photographed everyone and everything. RIP Bill we miss you.
